The Little Chronicle of Magdalena Bach: A Bestseller by the British Author Esther Meynell

"The Little Chronicle of Magdalena Bach". This is the only English cover I found all over the internet. If you would like to buy this book in English, possible only as a pre-used copy, it will become a real treasure hunt, as I didn't find one single copy, not even in the second hand book sale area. May be, you succeed. Sorry, we don't sell it in the shop of "Bach 4 You", just for that only but crucial reason. Meanwhile, a few years are gone, and we actually found a source for you: Just click here.

The Little Chronicle of (Anna) Magdalena Bach ... that's a delightful title, and the only thing that comes to mind for a great many Bach specialists is that it's not a biography. They are all right. And yet this little book is eminently worth reading. It is ... "light fare." And as for the biographical inaccuracies. They are really not that bad and of no biographical significance anyway. It is simply a delightful introduction to the life of the greatest composer of all time.

The Little Chronicle of (Anna) Magdalena Bach is fantastic for all interested people who do not want to write a dissertation about Johann Sebastian Bach afterwards. For those who already want to have great fun reading, for those who want to find reading entertaining. Esther Meynell deserves credit for achieving that with her book and having achieved it many years meanwhile. One has fun reading it and being transported into the world of Johann Sebastian Bach.

In general, a biography such as Esther Meynell's cannot be compared with today's super works by Christoph Wolff or Sir Eliot Gardiner. In our opinion, both appeal to a completely different audience. For the biography of Wolff, someone who simply wants to be entertained needs quite a bit of perseverance. And also Sir Gardiner's biography is also demanding. The Little Chronicle of (Anna) Magdalena Bach is not that at all. You read it as if you were listening to Esther Meynell read aloud. It can only be topped by listening to music by Johann Sebastian Bach. But an audiobook of it ... that will be around .... unfortunately not for a long time. Sorry.

In a long row of years there were many different covers of this bestseller in Germany. Three of all of them is what you see here. My estimation is, that this book was way more popular in the German-speaking area as the best sellers of today, as the editions came in the tens of thousands back then.
